In this chapter, we discuss scripting tools for the purpose of creating web-based interaction scenarios featuring lifelike characters. The Multi-modal Presentation Markup Language (MPML) is an XML-style language that provides tagging structures for the verbal and non-verbal behavior of cartoon-style characters , presentation flow, and integration of external objects, like Java applets. While MPML supports the control of embodied agents with predefined (scripted) behavior, the Scripting Emotion-based Agent Minds (SCREAM) system allows us to design agents that autonomously generate emotionally and socially appropriate behaviors based on their character profile. In order to facilitate high-level scripting and con-nectivity with MPML, the SCREAM system is written in a lightweight Java-based Prolog system and Java. The implementation of a casino scenario running in a web browser demonstrates the power and flexibility of both systems.
