The onset of parenthood with the arrival of a baby is a time when parents have important needs in terms of support and information. Thanks to an Agreement between the Andalusian Health Service and the University of Seville's Department of Developmental Psychology, a set of seven booklets were designed for future parents promoting a satisfactory transition to parenthood and, in turn, favour the development of their babies. The programme was evaluated by comparing the control group (families who had not participated in the training programme) with the experimental group (families who had participated in the programme). According to the results, the parents participating in the programme enjoyed a more satisfactory transition to parenthood, and had more stimulating interactions with their babies. These results show the importance of preventive support programmes during the process of becoming parents. © 2004 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
