The study of immigration requires a multilevel framework that includes structural features, social interactions, and individual thoughts and actions-an ideal terrain for social psychological analysis. Drawing on the work of Sheldon Stryker and other identity researchers, I focus on the experience of immigrants as it reflects on both identity structure and process. Two areas in particular are enriched by an identity theory perspective: first, the multiplicity of identities, as exemplified in theimmigrant experience by combinations of ethnic and national identity; and second, flexibility and change in identities across time, as illustrated by choices immigrants make to maintain, alter, and express various identity options in different contexts.
