Abstract

In the early decades of the twentieth century, Mallorca evolved as an important tourist region. Close by, the island of Ibiza took advantage of the economies of location so as to position itself in the sector. Despite sharing many elements of the economic model of the tourist take-off of its neighbours, Menorca was unable to make progress. By analysing this divergence, this study considers the role of supply and demand factors in the development of the first tourist destinations.
