Abstract

Abstract : This paper shows the gender construction in the novel “Perempuan Berkalung Sorban” (PBS) – The Veil Neck Woman (VNW) by Abidah El Khalieqi. The method used in this paper is a qualitative description. Based on the analysis, there are two gender constructions in the text, namely the religion and community constructions. Both are interconnected so that it makes biased between religion and society. The gender construction and patriarchal culture make women vulnerable to the violence, which are in the novel VNW including rape, sexual abuse/sexual and emotional harassment, veiled violence, acts of beating, and physical attacks that occurred in the household. Abstrak: Tulisan ini memperlihatkan konstruksi gender dalam novel Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (PBS) . Metode yang dipakai dalam tulisan ini ialah deskripsi kualitatif. Berdasarkan analisis terdapat dua kontsruksi gender yang terdapat dalam teks, yaitu konstruksi yang dibangun agama dan konstruksi yang dibangun oleh masyarakat. Keduanya saling berhubungan sehingga konstruksi tersebut menjadi bias antara agama dan masyarakat. Konstruksi gender dan budaya patriaki tersebut membuat perempuan rentan terhadap kekerasan, yang dalam novel PBS diantaranya tindak perkosaan, pelecehan seksual/ sexual and emotional harassment , kekerasan terselubung, tindakan pemukulan, dan serangan fisik yang terjadi dalam rumah tangga.
