Abstract

Chapter 18 presented mathematical expressions to describe the various macroscale heat and mass transfer processes that are important in SSF bioreactors. These expressions contain various parameters. In order to solve mathematical models of SSF bioreactors, it is necessary to supply values for these parameters. This chapter gives recommendations for how these parameters can be estimated, by experimental or other means. However, it does not give detailed instructions for how to carry out such determinations. It also addresses other parameters that become important in the bioreactor design and optimization process. The determination of transfer coefficients is addressed in Chap. 19. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
