Synthesizing the explosion of recent developments in the field of rib fractures remains a challenge. In many cases, clinical implementation of treatment modalities has preceded their rigorous evaluation. Advancement in this field will require the development and validation of standardized definitions for fracture patterns, indications for surgery, and outcomes assessment, with an emphasis on long-term quality of life. Ideally, investigation of new technologies will operate under this framework. Migration away from reflexive opioid prescription is also imperative; this transition will require funding and rapid investigation of alternative analgesic regimens. Finally, developments in the care of chest wall injured patient should occur under the guidance and support of national and international academic organizations tasked with education, guideline development, and research. Such organization should involve healthcare providers from the vast array of specialties involved in the care of rib fracture patients, to maximize both transfer of information and collaboration.
