Abstract

Extra-corporeal life support (ECLS) is routinely being used in lung transplantation. In highly debilitated patients, its use as a “bridge to transplant” modality has gained widespread acceptance. The methods and materials used for this technique are continuously evolving which is reflected by a decreasing waiting list mortality and improved post-operative outcomes after transplantation. The best result can be achieved if the ECLS therapy is individualized and tailored to the individual patient’s pulmonary pathology, hemodynamic situation, comorbidities as well as organ availability.
