Abstract

Selection of right building materials is a key factor in achieving the low energy and low emission buildings. In this paper, a model study is conducted to identify the energy saving potential in indoor lighting through different colour of floor tiles. The study revealed that the floor tile colour has the significant impact on electrical energy saving and lighting improvement. It is revealed that the minimum of 41% and maximum of 70.9% of light reflectance could be increased and saved by providing the white coloured tile. This study also proved that building materials can also contribute to the electrical energy saving. This strategy could be implemented to large commercial buildings, industrial buildings etc., to improve the lighting as well as energy saving without any additional investment and the payback is immediate.
