Abstract

The monocotyledons are very diverse in their external morphology. In several instances the morphological comparison and/or the homologies with corresponding organs of the dicotyledons are controversial. This problem is reflected in the descriptive literature by numerous rather vague terms and the frequent use of the prefix pseudo- (e.g., pseudobulb, pseudolamina, pseudopetiole, pseudostipule, etc.).
