In this chapter, we discuss the role of psychotherapy in the treatment of adolescents holding diverse gender identities. We begin by reviewing the process of exploring gender identity and expression in transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth presenting to psychotherapy. We discuss the assessment for psychosocial stressors and sources of support. Readers will develop an understanding of mental health concerns that may stem from psychosocial stressors, including minority stress. We include recommendations for treatment planning and intervention in providing care for TGD youth. This includes a review of modalities, case management, gender-affirming practices, and the process of referring for feminizing/masculinizing medical and surgical procedures.
