Abstract

This article argües that because of Chile's independence and its eventual process of State-formation, the country needed to establish a new political-administrative order dividing the national territory according to a republican model. However, this was a foreign idea, because the origins of the model applied in Chile carne from France's territorial division into Departments that emerged after the French Revolution of 1789. This event gave an egalitarian and republican ideological support to the space organization. © 2009 Instituto de Historia. Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
