Agricultural policies over the last 40 years have had the primary purpose of increasing production. These policies have been supported by grower and market subsidies, which now increasingly bring a burden to the European budget. Todays economic environment is bringing a new focus to agricultural policies which are orientate more towards market needs than solely increasing production. Triticale finds itself in an increasingly competitive cereals market. Will it remain a minor novelty cereal or does the species have the ability to become a main stream cereal. Why are we producing triticale and what to its future? The problems of triticale may relate more to the marketplace than they do to the field or laboratory. This is the dilemma facing triticale.
