Abstract

Twenty-two papers consider the studies, programs, and designs for the project "Sustainable Social, Economic, and Environmental Revitalization in the Historic Core of Multan City" in Pakistan. Papers discuss the culture and knowledge of the core of Multan; an international multidisciplinary cross-cultural cooperation project of urban regeneration; the territorial and historical framework of Multan--a prosperous land and an inspiring past leading to a new progress; studies and documentation on tourism and the mapping of historical hot spots in Multan; a microcredit system for building rehabilitation and strengthening arts and crafts; a strategic analysis of Multan handicrafts; entrepreneurship collaboration, new business models, and firm creation--enhancing local economical networks; remote sensing urban analysis; ground survey--an integrated survey for urban and architectural heritage conservation and management; energy problems analysis; air quality measurements in Multan; water and sanitation in Multan; characters of the settlement structure and the geographic information system as an instrument of urban analysis; two design proposals for Haram Gate and Sarafa Bazaar; designing the master plan for the pilot area in Multan; traffic analysis and solutions; guidelines for Multan--knowledge, conservation, and the relationship between the ancient and the new for a sustainable rehabilitation; conservation actions for wooden building elements in Multan; the conservation project of Haram Gate--material authenticity and recognizability of the project; the Pakistani-Italian Resource Centre and the enhancement of Multan; the Italian collaboration program for training and capacity building; and an architectural analysis of Multan--a "pilot experiment" of collaboration with the building and architectural engineering department of Bahauddin Zakariya University.
