Abstract

Sickle cell disease is a chronic disorder characterized by painful crises, debilitating complications, and a shortened life span. The pain associated with sickle cell crises is often severe, but poorly managed in many health care settings. The disease process and recommendations for effective pain management in this population of patients are discussed.
