Abstract

The convergence of telecommunications, computing and content industries has been one of the major trends during the recent years. The convergence has lead to the creation of a wide range of multimedia services, which are available in digital form through broadband networks. There is a need for network nodes that are capable of interfacing to different kinds of networks and implementing a programmable service platform for multimedia services. As a solution to this need, this paper introduces the Media Switch, which is able to combine different switching disciplines into a compact fabric and provides a platform for multimedia services. Finally, example services based on the Media Switch prototype are presented. © 2003 by Springer Science+Business Media New York.
