Abstract

Replies to comments made by S. W. Woods (see record 1999-01938-023) concerning the authors' previous study concerning the development of tardive dyskinesia (TD) in schizophrenic patients treated with olanzapine or haloperidol (see record 1999-10089-006). The authors respond to issues raised by Woods concerning the sensitivity of the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale used. Beasley notes that cases identified during the initial 6-wk examination period may have been identified because of confounding of withdrawal phenomena have been acknowledged. Beasley also notes that readers were cautioned not to accept the absolute rate of development of TD found in their study as necessarily valid, and that the relative differences between rates of development of TD during olanzapine and haloperidol treatments in these large samples of patients would appear well established and valid.
