Abstract
This recently established family encompasses two genera, Rikenella and Alistipes. Rikenella is monospecific and contains R. microfusus and Alistipes is comprised of A. putredinis, A. finegoldii, A. onderdonkii and A. shahii. The organisms group together based on 16S rRNA gene phylogenies and share general characteristics including an anaerobic metabolism, the formation of rods, and often resistance to 20 % bile. Members of this family seem specialized to the digestive tract of a number of different animals.
