Abstract

This article has as its main purpose to present the current state of the question related with the challenges and opportunities imposed to the library sector by a changing technological environment. The analysis of the literature focuses on three key elements for the development of libraries today: the readers -the reason for the existence of libraries-, librarians -as mediators and facilitators of information and educational processes- and technologies -which foster the development of new services and products. Librarians must clearly recognize their role today, so that their work remains relevant.
