Although graphic processing units (GPU graphics processing unit (GPU)s) have been traditionally used only for computer graphics, a recent technique called general-purpose computing on graphics processing units allows GPUs to perform numerical computations usually handled by the CPU central processing unit (CPU) (central processing unit). The advantage of using GPU optimizations for general purpose computation is the performance speedup that can be achieved due to the parallel architecture of these devices. This chapter describes the use of bio-inspired optimization methods as particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithms on GPUs to demonstrate the performance that can be achieved using this technology, primarily with regard to using CPUs.
