Abstract

from back cover: Michael Dummett, Wykeham Professorof Logic at the University of Oxford, is one of themost influential and original livingphilosophers. This volume contains eight essays onhis work both inside and outside philosophy, withdetailed replies by Dummett himself. Probably mostexcitement in the philosophical world has beengenerated by Dummett's attack on the doctrine ofrealism, and by the views on the nature of meaningwith which that attack is associated. Five of theessays in the volume \dots are concerned withasymmetries of time and causation. Dummett is also adistinguished figure in two widely disparate areasoutside philosophy: the political field of thecampaign against racism, in which (together with hiswife Ann) he has made a significant publiccontribution; and the scholarly field of the historyof playing cards, in which he is a world expert. Athought-provoking essay by John Rex outlines thebackground against which his work in the formerfield has taken place, whilst Sylvia Manncontributes a delightful introduction to the latterfield.
