Abstract

In Albert Vigoleis Thelen's autobiographical novel The Island of Second Sight (1953) the paths of the Jewish and antifascist expatriates and the 'Strength through Joy' tourists are crossing in Mallorca right before the Spanish Civil War. In my article I intend to demonstrate how exile and tourism are related to each other in the text and beyond it, by comparing for the first time selected travel descriptions of the 1930s till 1960s with Thelen's 'Applied Recollections'.
