Abstract

The elements of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon are the building blocks of the plant, 99% of its green weight consist of these elements. Some 75% of the green weight is composed of water, the balance being dry matter. Water is taken up by the plant almost entirely from the soil, the dry matter on the other hand is built up by the plant by means ofcarbon assimilationor photosynthesis.During this process water and carbon dioxide combine into carbohydrate, a group of organic compounds of the basic formula Cn(H20n) Photosynthesis may be represented by the equation:
