Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the career dynamics among women using asymmetric multidimensional scaling. Based upon a national sample in Japan in 1995, we analyze the occupational mobility tables of 1405 women among nine occupational categories obtained at various time periods. We find that asymmetric career changes within similar occupational categories take place a lot in one's 30s or later. Women, unlike in the case of men, appear to change their occupational status in mid-career.
