Abstract

My task in this essay is not to discuss the various forms of rites of purification in Mahayana Buddhism nor to present the view of purity in a particular Buddhist sutra or school, but rather to clarify the religious meaning of what I consider to be the fundamental idea of purity underlying Mahayana Buddhism.
