Abstract

A report is presented of a series of improved experiments which include the preparation and cooling of single ions. These localized particles are genuine mono-ion oscillators at rest in space and driven by the light fields or, alternatively, part of an ionic quasi-molecule whose negatively charged core consists of the macroscopic trap.
