Abstract

A review is presented which contains a description of modern methods of observing the minor planets and the principles of their cataloging and denomination. The methods for calculating their perturbations and ephemerides are listed. Problems concerning the study of the motion of the minor planets are pointed out, and some of their statistical properties and physical characteristics are given. Hypotheses of the origin of the asteroid belt are set forth.
