Abstract

The basics of III-V compounds and the phenomenon of light emission are discussed. In comparing the basic materials particular mention is made of GaAsP and GaP. After explaining the design and the manufacture, the article passes on to the available forms of the products, and then to the major electrical and optical data. The author also goes into the advantages and disadvantages of light-emitting diodes and their life expectancy. In addition to some examples of application, there are short sections on infrared emitters and laser diodes and a survey of the most important types with some typical characteristics in the form of a table.
