Abstract

This chapter sets volunteer involvement in historical context, outlines how it is conceived, offers models of volunteer involvement and considers the plurality of volunteer involvement concepts, including the role of ideology and the state. It encourages the reader to use five ‘Exercises’ to reflect on how volunteering has changed over time, how it is conceptualised and organised today and who should have power to make decisions.
