Abstract

The femtosecond laser is able to overcome some major problems that can occur in manual cataract surgery and particularly in manual BIL cataract surgery – most of all the highly demanding posterior capsulotomy. The different steps of the laser technique are described which generally lead to capsulotomies of perfect circularity, optimal centration, and a diameter that fits the requirements of any IOL type. Laser pretreatment – which in many cases – can be performed without any ultrasound application at all. The centration of an IOL implanted using BIL technique is optimal, and the formation of PCO is prevented. Knowing the specifics of laser treatment, though, is essential for the success like the elevation of prostaglandin levels in the aqueous humor and the necessity to perform all steps in a sterile environment. The method is particularly promising in children with cataract.
