This paper reports a study with daylighting simulation in the architectural design process, through the evaluation of two simulation tools - ECOTECT 5.5 (as interface to RADIANCE) and RELUX2006 VISION. This study was developed from the architect's point of view and in the context of the design process. The evaluation was conducted taking into account criteria such as User Interface, Geometry, Output, Daylight Parameters, Material Description, Processing, Validation, and User Support. Among these criteria, User Interface is especially important for the architect. It is the best way to overcome the natural barriers in using digital processes in architectural design, with the objective of reaching environmental comfort and energy efficiency. The methodology used includes a large number of simulations in tropical climate, aiming at testing the simulation tools in different daylight conditions in Brazil. The results of this evaluation show a great potential for improving the use of simulation tools in the design process, through a better understanding of these tools. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2008.
