Abstract

This chapter focuses on alcohol and drug addiction recovery among men and women residing in a communal-living, self-help setting that promotes a psychological sense of community (PSOC) toward sobriety called Oxford House. The authors believe that the bonding and abstinence support within the sense of community of Oxford House that residents receive turns the "house" into a "home" for those persons invested in the lives of fellow residents. In this chapter, the authors present a brief review of their recent research focusing on the Oxford House model for recovering substance abusers, demonstrating how a PSOC promoting social support for abstinence may facilitate addiction recovery.
