Abstract

One major objective of this book was to portray achievements in widening access to education and the consequent challenges in the era of globalization. Whether it be social, economic, or political, globalization has a way of making its influence felt. It is because we suspected that globalization may have far-reaching effects on the widening of access to education in the North and the South that we framed the discussions in the book as we did. It is hoped that this approach will yield some insights that will inform the thrust of research over the next 5 or 6 years in different parts of the world. Much of what is presented in the present chapter therefore draws on reflections on initiatives in selected countries for widening access to education, particularly the possible research gaps that need to be filled in order to broaden and deepen our understanding of the central phenomena. The thrust of research into the issues of widening access to education is situated in the context of globalization. © 2006 Springer. Printed in the Netherlands.
