Abstract

Biodiversity estimates in three traditional groves in the Guinea savanna of northern Ghana have been given. There is an indication of a lower species diversity within than outside the core of the groves. Aspects of life form composition indicate the preponderance of therophytic life forms, particularly outside the core. Thirteen plant (sub-)families, namely: Caesalpinioideae, Combretaceae, Compositae, Euphorbiaceae, Malvaceae, Mimosoideae, Moraceae, Papilionoideae, Rubiaceae and Tiliaceae in the class Dicotyledonae and Araceae, Cyperaceae and Gramineae in the class Monocotyledonae were noted to contribute most species and genera to the flora of the three groves
