Monumentality and landmarks fishing: concepts to understanding fishing in Sambaquis societies

Abstract

There seems to be a consensus that the populations that built the sambaquis of Southern Brazil are eminently navigators and definitely fishermen. Furthermore, it is in the wake of these approaches that this work proposal is inserted. For this purpose, a theoretical path is proposed. Two inherent concepts are discussed, either to the archology of the sambaquis: monumentality, or to fishing, as a broader sociological subject: landmark fishing. The final interpretation proposed here is that monumentality takes on yet another meaning in the sambaquieira society: guiding marking fishing, a universal and structuring practice for fishing populations on the Brazilian coast.
