The changing chinese community mediascape since the early 1990s

Abstract

Jia Gao and Lu Zhang examine changes in the Chinese community mediascape that have occurred as a result of the resumption of direct and significant immigration from the Chinese mainland to Australia in the early 1990s. The settlement of tens of thousands of Chinese students and the subsequent chain of immigration flows from China have resulted in a series of changes to the ethnic Chinese community in Australia. One of the most significant changes in this community has involved Chinese community media. This recent transformation is broadly divided into three phases, including the re-establishment stage in the early 1990s, the diversification period and the current transformation phase. This chapter provides an analysis of media production within the rapidly growing and changing ethnic Chinese community in Australia.
