Abstract

Discusses the epidemiology and history of suicide among the Canadian Inuit. The authors describe the history of the Inuit people, arguing that this cultural group has experienced profound cultural change in their lives. These changes have influenced suicide rates, primarily among younger individuals. The authors also report 2 types of personal documents in the form of personal narratives or story telling that enable understanding of suicide in this population. Words of healing from an Inuit Elder are provided to describe the pain felt among Inuit and the healing process that is needed to overcome this pain.
