Marcasite single crystals were synthesized directly by a reaction of aqueous solutions containing Fe2+ and Fe 3+ with H 2 S and polysulphides at 200°C. It might be that natural marcasite formed according to some similar recipe, making use of an interaction of H 2 S and polysulphides with pore fluids containing Fe 2+ or Fe 3+ e.g.. iron sulphates or chlorides. The structure of synthetic marcasite was refined from synchrotron diffraction data by the Rietveld method.
