Abstract

Ferriamicide, a degradable formulation of mirex produced by the Mississippi Authority for the Control of Fire Ants, was evaluated for control of imported fire ants on non-agricultural land during the summer of 1978. The granular bait formulation was applied broadcast at a rate of 1 lb bait per acre (227 mg ai/acre), by helicopter equipped with a specially designed bait distribution system. A total of eighteen different test plots ranging in size from 10 to 100 acres were treated between Aug 25 and 31, 1978. All test plots were located in Central and South Mississippi. The degree of control was determined by counting all live ant colonies within three to eight subplots randomly located within each test plot. Counts were made prior to treatment and at 4, 8, and 12 weeks following treatment.
