Abstract
The chapter deals with engineering concepts related with soft rocks. Different classifications of soft rock are introduced. The strength characteristics of soft rock are related to the magnitude of ground stress. The concepts of critical softening load and critical softening depth is induced. From a view point of engineering, soft rocks can be classified into expansible soft rock, high strength soft rock, jointed rocks, and their combination.
