Abstract

Outpatient clinics and patient management outside of the intra- and periprocedural settings are key components of an interventional radiology (IR) practice. Interventional radiologists have a unique skill set to contribute to patient care and must recognize their role within the patient care team in order to further establish the field. Infrastructure requirements for establishing an outpatient practice include physical space beyond the standard diagnostic radiology department, additional support staff, and tools for appointment scheduling and logistical management. The IR outpatient clinic is important in the pre-procedural setting to allow the patient to learn about the procedure, ask pertinent questions, and explore alternative therapies. IR outpatient clinics are important in the post-procedural setting for assessment of outcomes and possible complications following the procedure as well as planning for additional treatment if necessary.
