Abstract

A Cellular Automata methodological approach for modelling large scale (extended for kilometres) surface flows (e.g. lava flows, debris flows etc.) is here presented. It represents an improvement to previous empirical approaches, in order to obtain a more physical description of the phenomenon and a more accurate control of its development. The flows are described as interacting "blocks" individuated by their mass centre position and velocity inside each cell. Such an approach was applied to lava flows; an event of the last (2002) Etnean eruption was simulated with relevant results. © Springer-Verlag 2004.
