Abstract

This chapter analyzes the socioeconomic characteristics of the city of Gondar. In 2014, the Municipality conducted a survey to collect information on the socioeconomic characteristics of the community as input for the development plan of the city. It also carried out a citizen participation workshop that included major community leaders and stakeholders. Some very important issues and problems impacting the city were identified in the workshop. The summary analysis presents the results of the survey, including the analysis of neighborhood conditions, living standards (income, jobs, and housing), education, and health of the community. The chapter develops a community information system (CIS) and also demonstrates how to conduct projections on some important characteristics of the community (e.g., population) and apply projection techniques including extrapolation and cohort-survival population projection.
