Abstract

A mesh-based repair is, in many Western countries, the most popular technique for repairing abdominal wall hernia in order to reduce the risk of recurrence [1-7]. More than 80% of adult abdominal wall hernias occur in the groin, and in the Western world the majority are being repaired with the use of a prosthetic mesh. There is a large variation in techniques used to correct a groin hernia, with an even larger variety of meshes. Currently the most popular inguinal hernia technique is the Lichtenstein hernia repair [8], using a flat mesh to reinforce the inguinal wall. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
