We expect that mycobacteria will be responsible for ever greater levels of morbidity and mortality in the future because of aging human populations and increasing numbers of immune-suppressed individuals. Much of the impact will be a consequence of human activities, such as decontamination of drinking water and the accompanying selection of mycobacteria. Furthermore, because of the positive and negative impacts of mycobacteria on the environment, ecologists should consider mycobacteria in their plans and predictions. These considerations lead us to suggest the following areas for mycobacteria research. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
