Biliary tract pathology is commonly found in practice and clinicians, surgeons, and radiologists place considerable effort to rapidly and accurately diagnose these conditions in order to avoid mistakes that often cause considerable morbidity and mortality. Rapid advances in technology and refinements in invasive and noninvasive techniques have amplified the armamentarium options and enhanced the capability of available methods to evaluate the anatomy, function, and diseases of the gallbladder and biliary ductal system, and consequently make more precise diagnoses.
