Abstract

The 2nd generation VLT instrument for Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exo-planet Research (SPHERE) will include an integral field spectrograph to enhance the capabilities of detection of planetary companions close to bright stars. SPHERE-IFS is foreseen to work in near IR (0.95-1.35 μm) at low spectral resolution (R = 50). We present the concept of the instrument and the plans to achieve extreme luminosity contrast using it. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
