Abstract

A braille system for visually impaired people is valuable for acquiring information by using only tactile sense of the fingertips. However, the information can be expressed by braille is limited as characters, it’s difficult to display two-dimensional information or more. In this paper, we propose a braille display module based on electromagnetism principle, and propose possibility as a portable braille pad. The module has minimized size compared to the conventional braille actuator. While satisfying dimensions of braille standards, the braille pins are arranged at equidistant intervals to be able to express two-dimensional information. In addition, the proposed module has a rotating latch structure, which minimizes the power consumption and can be applied to portable device.
