Abstract

The relationships between sport and masculinity, which are relatively neglected in French works, were developed in the international literature in the last twenty years. A review of some of these studies in the fields of psychology, sociology and history, results in the identification of some keybooks, which highlight the main questions of today's works. Connell's concept of hegemonic masculinity seems particularly relevant to analyse both the complexity of the gender order and the co-existence of various forms of masculinity. The paper argues that it can be interesting to focus on specific contexts where masculinity reaches a higher visibility. Finally, on the base of different examples, it is argued that divers methods were used in this realm, going from content analysis to interviews, surveys and observations.
