Abstract

Handbook of Fractional-Horsepower Drives Abstract: Chapter 5 deals with drives based on piezoelectric solid-state actuators. In recent years, a large number of drive methods and designs for translatory and rotary motion has been developed based on the inverse piezoelectric effect. Most of them complement or augment the field of electromagnetic drives and their application. In some cases, they can be considered alternatives. The most important piezoelectric drives, their function and their performance are described here. Where relevant, the advantages and disadvantages of piezoelectric drives in comparison with their electromagnetic counterparts are pointed out.
